Johnson Vs Smith

The continual spat between the Home Secretary and the Mayor of London is fast becoming one UK politics finest spectator sports. In the red corner, Jacqui Smith sees her authority continually undermined as blue blooded Boris Johnson uses the blurred lines of responsibility to assert his authority over policing in the Capital.

After forcing out Sir Iain Blair the Mayor’s decision to pre-empt a Home Office announcement as to the resignation of Bob Quick after his security gaff must have been a pleasurable to Johnson (and for that matter Damien Green) as it was galling to Smith.

The first couple of rounds have gone to Johnson. Yet he would do well to remember that while Home Secretaries may come and go, Civil Servants are permanent and their memories are long.
