Cameron thwarts the fightback...

It’s been a tumultuous few weeks for the Labour government, with Gordon Brown desperately seeking a bounce in the polls before the European on June 4th, fresh rumours of leadership challenges will are another unwelcome thorn in his side. Nevertheless, today was the PMs chance to fight back in PMQs.

However, Cameron thwarted the PM by putting in an impressive PMQ performance; the Conservative leader called on Gordon Brown to do the "last bold thing left to him" and call a general election. He also asked the Prime Minister why the communities secretary Hazel Blears remains in the cabinet after she wrote an article on the "lamentable" performance of government in the Observer, Cameron claimed this was evidence that PM has "failed to run a united cabinet".

Brown responded by claiming that the Tories were isolated on the world stage with politics from the “dark ages”, repeating his ‘do nothing’ mantra and claiming that Cameron was out of his depth. The PM then accused Cameron of reducing "everything to personality". He continued, "Once again, he has got nothing to say about the big issues of the day," the prime minister told the House. “Compassionate Conservativism' is gone, gone and gone.” The Tory leader replied: "I am sure that sounded just great in the Bunker."

Next week’s battle lines have already been drawn over the proposed reforms to the Post Office, a battle that Brown needs to win, to reassert his dented authority.
